I always carry DriverPack Solution on my 16 GB capacity USB flash disk (it is recommended to format your thumb drive to NTFS file system). Obtain DriverPack Solution and copy it to your thumb drive (or other medium such as DVD DL or Blu-Ray disc).
And my story goes as follows: I got a computer that has operating system restored from the backup image of another computer (that has a different hardware, as well), but without universal restore technique used. Surprisingly, the operating system managed to boot without BSOD, and in this scenario driver issues are to be expected:
Note: find more about Device Manager and drivers’ state in this article regarding hardware identification. If you look at the picture you should see somewhat difficult situation: besides others, I am missing drivers for my Ethernet controller and USB controller. That means that I can’t use my USB flash drive to install missing drivers with DriverPack Solution and I have no Internet access to download drivers from the Internet.
How to deal with this situation? Well, somehow we need to copy DriverPack Solution from the USB flash drive (in my case) onto the hard disk or SSD on the computer. Therefore, I decided to boot Linux Xubuntu Live CD (any other Live or Rescue CD will do the job) and copy DriverPack Solution files to the D: partition (105 GB volume, from the picture below):
Boot your Windows once again and open D: partition (or a location where you copied DriverPack Solution):
Of course, if you want to avoid copying by using a Live CD, burn this driver pack to a Dual Layer DVD or Blu-Ray disc on another computer and copy it back from the disc to your hard disk.
Regardless of the method you use, the easy part of this real time example is running DriverPackSolution:
It may take a while to scan a computer for the missing drivers and old drivers that are already installed and in use. I usually tick the Expert mode, to see the detailed report of the missing drivers; tick Settings, and activate the Expert mode:
Select all the drivers you want to install and click on Install drivers:
Note: besides drivers, DriverPack Solution contains a set of common applications that you can install additionally, but I usually don’t use this feature.
After a while, you should see that there are no missing drivers:
All drivers are installed and the drivers’ state is now fine. I inserted my thumb drive to check if it will work correctly, and immediately afterwards Auto Play opened (see the picture above). OK, USB drivers are fixed and additionally you can fire up the Device Manager, to double check if there are any question marks displayed:
That’s it, the computer is ready for the regular use (when it comes to drivers, at least) ?
